IT IS HARD TO ENJOY LIFE WHEN THERE IS NO WATER AND ELECTRICITY, AND THE WINDOWS ARE SMASHED

Updated: Apr 2, 2023

Monday, December 26, 2022, did not treat the residents of Kherson well. The gloomy sky hung heavy over the city, the north wind and excessive humidity depressed the mood of the residents of the frontline city. Oleksiy celebrated his 75th birthday in an apartment with broken windows, no centralized heating, water or electricity. It was winter outside, there were no glass panes in the windows, and the wind carried the remaining heat out of the room.

The car of the PAL-UA evacuation team was driving at high speed. Somewhere in a cold high-rise building, an elderly man with a disability was waiting for help, a man with whom there was no telephone connection. His closest relatives live in Mykolaiv, not the safest place, but their homes have water, electricity and heat. After suffering a stroke, Oleksiy can sit up on his own, but his arm and leg do not work. An apartment without electricity, water and heating is not a very comfortable place for a disabled person to live. The lack of telephone communication with his family is worrying and depressing.

As the driver approached the house, he disengaged the clutch and turned off the engine. It is necessary to find the head of the local association of homeowners. Oleksiy does not trust anyone except those he knows personally. The war has done its job of instilling distrust in the hearts of the residents of the occupied cities, both in unverified news and offers of help. Help that sometimes turns into trouble. During the war, many Ukrainians were deported by deception and force, against their will.

The evacuation of the patient went on as usual. Thanks to the quick actions and professional training of the PAL-UA team, the seventy-five-year-old man with paralyzed limbs was in the car within an hour. The road ahead was 630 kilometers long, and they had to leave the frontline city quickly.

Oleksiy looked sadly out the ambulance window, he was leaving his hometown where he had lived all his life. Ahead of him is a trip to Mykolaiv, a city where he has a home with water, electricity and heat. A home where relatives will take care of him and help him. Hope and peace filled his heart, but his mind did not fully realize that this was a rescue.

The PAL-UA evacuation team has been providing assistance to sick elderly residents of frontline Kherson without rest. They organize the transportation of helpless people to safe places, to relatives living hundreds of kilometers away. Your donation will be a contribution to the cause that will return hope for a decent life to the sick and helpless people of Ukraine.
